He worked nights and the zoo provided the perfect location to both entertain and educate two young boys. Although, not one of our required spots of every visit, quite frequently we would travel to Passenger Pigeon Memorial to look at the stuffed birds and be reminded of the devastative power of man. At the same time, we were instilled with the understanding that it is our responsibility to protect the species of our world. It is a beautiful planet with so many beautiful things in it. This play started its life about 10 years ago, when I submitted a much earlier version of the script to the Festival. Although, it was not chosen for that Festival year, I always intended to one day produce the play. After what seems like a rather unusual path (cough, cough...Furlesque), I am thrilled to finally bring Martha’s story to life in the same city that she (and I) call home. I hope that you enjoy the play. Some people have asked about the message of the play. The message of my play isn't sadness, (although I will understand if some assume that it is) but hope. The safety for the audience and actors had been built into the production design of the show. Precautions included physically distant staging, isolated rehearsals, required mask wearing, private party audience tours, and staggered ticketing to keep crowd numbers low. Periodic cleaning throughout the show occurred on all handrails and other high-touch surfaces. Each tour had a single guide to navigate through the theater’s historic campus, and patrons were only grouped with members of their own party for tours. Although the show was devised to be safely performed during the pandemic. We sat in the parlor of an old mansion, which had been converted into a museum. The lights dimmed and the spirits rose. They stood before us in all their transparent, spectral glory recounting the grand and forgotten stories of their lives. As the show ended and the lights returned to full, they seemingly melted back into the ether, returning to the grave from which they came. I love a good ghost story. I suspect that if you are attending a performance of Silent Scream and reading these thoughts, then I suspect that you might love a good ghost story as well. My love of ghost stories comes from my father, Brian. At an early age, my father would recount great stories of souls that had passed on and the spirits that were trying to make their way back. Whether it was walking through a historic cemetery or sitting around a campfire, my father always had a good story to tell. If you ask me, the best ghost stories are never solely about frightening the audience. There is a place for those types of stories. However, in my opinion, after you scare your audience, then what? The story is over. I prefer ghost stories that root themselves in your consciousness and have you thinking about them far after the initial scare has passed. I tend to write stories about love, and so, why should a ghost story be any different. I am sure that many of us are personally haunted by a love that was left behind. In developing Silent Scream, my greatest inspiration, without a doubt, would be the House of the Seven Gables (both the book and location). The House of the Seven Gables, made famous by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel of the same name, is a 1668 colonial mansion in Salem, Massachusetts. Several years ago, I found myself in Salem, Massachusetts for the Halloween holidays. While I was there, I fell in love with the historic house. In my opinion, the house imprints on those that visit. It draws the willing in and rewards them with a glimpse into a place not of our time and forever leaves them under its spell. My love for The House of Seven Gables, and Salem as a whole, can best be summed up in a line that was cut from Silent Scream due to timing: “Salem is the perfect place for the living and the dead.” I want to thank The Carnegie for allowing me to create this story in their historic halls. I ate very heartily of it last night, and it did not disturb in the slightest my digestion or my sleep.” - William Howard Taft For the last year, I have been haunted by William Howard Taft. I have visited his home, read his writings, and listened to him speak (we have a few recordings of his voice). As I spent an increasing amount of time with Will, the more I found myself being taken in by one of Cincinnati’s favorite sons. Generally, I don’t feel that a lot is known about our 27th President of the United States...well, except for maybe one thing. Perhaps, you know what I am talking about? Yes, the bathtub story. Besides that historical anecdote, his legacies are always around us with the continuation of the National Parks System, the implementation of vigorous anti-trust legislation, and the ceremonial throwing of the “Presidential First Pitch” to name a few. I am not bold enough to say that he was our greatest president. There are many that have been better and have accomplished a great deal more. However, what endears Will to me is his greatest trait: the strength of his love. William loved his wife, Nellie. There was never a wavering doubt in that fact. So, why a possum? I first learned of the intended replacement of the Teddy Bear, a few years ago. I knew that I wanted to tell a story around the Possum. The night that Will was presented with the first Billy Possum is nothing more than a historical footnote. Yet, it’s theses obscure moments that present us with an opportunity for exploration, interpretation and fun. Then in 1992, Jurassic Park brought this Jurassic theropod to the main stage with the other big boys and girls of our dinosaur lexicon. Although, their portrayal of this slender, light footed predator had some inaccuracies (cough, cough. It didn’t spit venom and have a frill), it did bring the dinosaur to my attention. I could go on and on about the dilophosaurus and dinosaurs, but I won’t today. I truly hope you enjoy this show and find some of the magic that you had when you were a kid when dinosaurs filled your imaginations with limitless possibilities. ...oh, and one more thing. I know that some of you will be wondering about feathers. We have built our dinosaur without feathers. There is clear fossil evidence for the presence of feathers in later theropods. However, there is no conclusive evidence that these early Jurassic predators had them. Amongst, those who witnessed the birth of this idea was Lauren Carr and Mike Hall. I wanted to recognize them both specifically for continually being by my side helping and pushing this idea into reality. Furlesque, like most shows, has gone through several different visions and re-writes before it materialized on stage at the Cincinnati Fringe Festival. One of the biggest changes to the script came in the last few months while investigating the furry community. It is a common misconception that this community is solely interested in one thing: sex. For five and half of those years, I toured the country performing solo puppet shows, two person puppet shows, black light puppet shows, shadow puppet shows and personal puppet appearances of all different varieties. Sequences feature a mop playing chess, a blue lightbulb, a bunny trying to find acceptance, a monkey in a cemetery, puppets on fire, puppets underwater and so much more. This award winning puppet film premiered as part of the 2021 Cincinnati Fringe Festival and has since been a virtual component of several other festivals. Mette (Puppeteer & Puppet Builder) Sean P. Mette is a writer, actor, and puppeteer. Sean started his professional theatrical career as a touring puppeteer and actor for Madcap Puppets. Since then, he has performed for the Know Theatre of Cincinnati, the Carnegie and OTRimprov, where he is one of the founding members. As a puppeteer, Sean has operated puppets for a few organizations including with CET Public Television as a performer in their $martpath series. In 2018, Sean’s experience in puppetry allowed him to join as an adjunct faculty member of Capital University, teaching a course in puppetry. As a writer, Sean has had several of his plays produced by Autumn Kaleidoscope including “Furlesque”, “The Haunting of William Howard Taft”, “Martha” and “The Bassoonist”. Nothing is significant. On a few occasions after a performance, an audience member has found me with the desire to discuss the performance that they have just attended. Sometimes they want to glean the symbolism presented in the show, ranging from acting choices to costume to set pieces. Yes, as artists, we make certain decisions to allow something to embody a much deeper meaning or truth. However, sometimes, a decision is made purely out of necessity. The entire set needed to be able to fit in a closet. The costumes were donated. The actor had to leave through that door because…there was no stage left. I will never correct these audience members because, they obviously found a connection that truly meant something to them. They constructed a new way for the performance to become much deeper in meaning that it was intended to be. Why would I ever take that away? Which brings me to this show. The concept seemed simple: create a show that could be completely open to interpretation. Devise a show that would allow the audience to interpret what they wanted from the show. To create a conversation. A show where everything was significant and, at the same time, allow for nothing to be significant. Notice, I said that the concept “seemed simple”. The show took months to design and build. As I began to work on certain puppets or scenes, I discovered that what I was creating was no longer to the original concept of the show. Of the original forty-two scenes for this show, less than half survived to the final product. (All is not lost, there is another real good puppet show to be created from the material that was cut that will be presented in the future.) Admittedly, there was a second, more personal goal for the show. I wanted to perform puppets in ways that I have never performed them before; ways that would not normally work on a traditional fringe stage. This is a long way to say, that I wanted to get things wet and set things on fire. However, like many things in this show, proved easier said than done. The Rain Dragon took weeks to design and build, only to be broken beyond repair on its first film outing (it’s a miracle that we got what we needed). The Firebird (that was not seen in this production) had to be scrapped due to design, construction, and safety concerns. (The test puppets may have started a small fire.) However, for each set back there are also moments of true joy. The plesiosaur puppet changed truly little from concept to final product. For as simple as the puppet may have been to build, the happiness that it continues to bring me is unequaled. The scene of the plesiosaur playing with me at the end of the show, spitting water on my face was not scripted. That elation on my face is truly genuine and I honestly cannot believe that I was able to capture it. If you are reading this, you have most likely already seen the performance. Thank you. It may not seem like much, but I deeply appreciate your support. You did not have to see this show, but you did and for that I am eternally thankful. He worked nights and the zoo provided the perfect location to both entertain and educate two young boys. Although, not one of our required spots of every visit, quite frequently we would travel to Passenger Pigeon Memorial to look at the stuffed birds and be reminded of the devastating power of man. At the same time, we were instilled with the understanding that it is our responsibility to protect the species of our world. It is a beautiful planet with so many beautiful things in it. This play started its life about 10 years ago, when I submitted a much earlier version of the script to the Festival. Although, it was not chosen for that Festival year, I always intended to one day produce the play. After what seems like a rather unusual path (cough, cough...Furlesque), I am thrilled to finally bring Martha’s story to life in the same city that she (and I) call home. Although, George did not come from the wild as depicted in the show, everything else is mostly factual. They could not produce a viable offspring and George died four years before Martha. With Martha’s passing, it is the first time that we have an exact time and date of the extinction of a species. (September 1st 1914, 1:00pm) When Martha passed she was shipped inside a 500 pound block of ice to the Smithsonian in Washington DC, where she resides today...with George. The enclosure that Martha lived in is still at the Cincinnati Zoo, near its original location. The stage dimensions of show are almost exactly the same size of her aviary cage. The Carolina Parakeet (Conuropsis carolinensis) was the only parrot species native to the eastern United States. After Martha’s passing the last two Carolina Parakeets (Incas and Lady Jane) lived in Martha’s aviary cage. Accomplish what they normally couldn’t in one lifetime. It is incredibly tempting to ponder of all the good, or trouble, one could create if death was not a factor. However, if there is one thing that I have learned from my research into stories and legends from around the world, it is that immortality is a curse. To clarify, I am not talking about one’s immortal soul, instead, referring to an immortality in which you are cursed to live. Legends, stories, and folk tales warn us that immortals eventually do everything, go everywhere, and see everything. However, once you have experienced all there is in life, what’s next? You still have all eternity before you. It’s not hard to assume this would leave a few wishing for that “‘consummation, devoutly to be wished.” (As the Bard so eloquently put it.) As I began to write the final version of this show, I decided that I wanted to present a non-rose-colored glasses perspective of immortality. We, unintentionally, hold the idea of immortals as almost god-like creatures, but in most legends they are normal people, like you and me. Often, they make one poor decision and by doing so curse themselves with the worst of situations. They may be immortal, but they’re still human. The Legend of Cartaphilus began to become more well known in the 13th century. The core of the legend revolves around a man who taunts Jesus on the way to the Crucifixion and becomes cursed to walk the Earth until the Second Coming. The exact nature of the indiscretion varies in different versions of the tale, as do aspects of his character. The name Cartaphilius comes from the 1228 version of the legend found in Flores Historiarum by Roger of Wendover. It is from this version of the legend, where we get the curse that Jesus vocalized to Cartaphilius, "I shall stand and rest, but thou shalt go on till the last day." We would be remiss if we did not mention an alternate title by which this legend is commonly known, being “The Legend of the Wandering” or “Eternal Jew.” Although for most of this legend’s history, the story was not directly used in a derogatory nature, instead being used to teach a lesson, we cannot deny that certain parties have twisted the legend to fit their anti-Semitic narrative over the centuries. It has never and will never be our intention to present our version of this Cartaphilus in an anti-Semitic manner. Any references to Cartaphilus’s presumed religion were purposely removed at the beginning of the creative process, allowing us to focus more on a character’s poor judgement and lack of empathy that caused him to be cursed. The name “Jack-o-lantern” dates to 17th century England. We may never know exactly when the warding off spirits with carved vegetables began in Ireland, but we do know the legend associated with the practice. The Legend of Stingy Jack originated several centuries ago in Ireland. In the legend, there lived a drunkard known as Stingy Jack. Jack was known throughout the land as a deceiver or manipulator. On a fateful night, Satan overheard the tale of Jack's evil deeds and silver tongue. Envious of the rumors, Satan went to find out if Jack lived up to his vile reputation. Over the next ten years, Satan was repeatedly outsmarted by Jack by varying means, culminating in Jack demanding that Satan never take his soul. Satan acquiesced. When it came time for Jack to die, he was barred from entering through the gates of Heaven due to his sinful lifestyle of deceitfulness and drinking. He then went to Hell, however, Satan fulfilling his obligation to Jack, could not take his soul. Instead, he gave Jack an ember to light his way. Barred from entrance into both Heaven and Hell, Jack is doomed to roam the world with only an ember inside a hollowed turnip to light his way. In the America’s we no longer associate the jack-o-lantern with the “Legend of Stingy Jack.” The more popular usage in American folklore comes from its inclusion in Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” While most retellings include the horseman with either the pumpkin for a head or carrying said lantern, the original story only mentions the shattered pumpkin at the site of Ichabod Crane’s hat the morning after his supposed encounter with the spectral legend. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ffd0f1820841d5b9f20d297/60134c3f-0c6d-4f90-91f9-1bee725868ff/Flying+Dutchman.jpg BFH - The Legends Behind the Characters - The Legend of the Flying Dutchman When you hear the words “The Flying Dutchman” several different thoughts may come to mind. For some it may be of a giant ghostly ship calmly sailing the seas, for others it might be a ship sailed by the damned with red billowing sails accompanied by one of the most recognizable overtures in opera history. Perhaps you think of the version sailed by Davy Jones across the Caribbean hunting Captain Jack Sparrow with his mighty Kraken or perhaps as the Brian Doyle Murray voiced character in Spongebob Squarepants. Regardless of how you may have been introduced, The Flying Dutchman is one, if not, the most famous ghost ship of all time. Legends of The Flying Dutchman originate in the 17th century, during the golden age of the Dutch East India Trading Company. Stories of a doomed ship cursed to sail the ocean forever spread quickly across the globe. As the legend grew, so did some of the quintessential characteristics that we associate with the ship. It can never make port. It glows with an eerie glow. Seeing it is a sign of doom. In our production, Senta and The Flying Dutchman, draw inspiration from not only the classic legends, but also the Wagner opera. The character name Senta comes from the Richard Wagner’s opera. At the conclusion of the opera, Senta throws herself into the sea, claiming that she will be faithful to the Captain unto death. This breaks the Captain’s curse causing the spectral ship to disappear. Many in the west may be familiar with this tale from either the English retelling by Arthur Ransome or the adaptation by the Grimm Brothers entitled “Godfather Death.” The original folk tale centers around a soldier returning home after 20 years of war, with three biscuits in his knapsack. On his way he meets three beggars to whom he gives the biscuits; in return one gives him a ruby whistle, one the jolliest dance, and the final man, who gets the last biscuit despite the soldier being hungry himself, in return gives him a pack of magic playing cards and a sack that has the power to trap anything ordered into it. The soldier uses these newly acquired skills to help himself in life. Eventually, in order to save the Tzar, he makes a deal with Death. The soldier swaps his life in exchange for the Tzar's. Death takes his offer and gives the illness to the soldier, curing the Tzar. Lying in his death bed, he summons Death into his sack and stops death from happening everywhere. Eventually, the Soldier frees Death, who fears the soldier and his sack so much that he refuses to take the soldier's life, cursing him with immortality. The folk tale of “The Soldier and Death” is probably most well-known from its inclusion in Jim Henson’s 1989 television series “The Storyteller.” In this version, the soldier is played by the British actor, Bob Peck. One might easily remember Peck from his portrayal of Game Warden, Robert Muldoon in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park (1993). A scene from the Jim Henson version of “The Soldier and Death” can be seen by clicking the button below. As said in the show, the tale of “The Soldier and Death” is “not a short story.” If you are interested, we highly recommend watching the Jim Henson adaptation.
